This week Grotto catches up with Julia Nusbaum, creator of HerStry. She runs the online literary magazine dedicated to empowering women to tell their own stories — including on topics like sexual assault.

"Everyone has a story and all of our stories are important, no matter how small," she shares.

Milwaukee, WI: Julia Nusbaum, creator of HerStry.

Julia Nusbaum: My name is Julia. I run HerStry, which is an online literary magazine dedicated to empowering women through telling their own story.

I've had people write about their assault or their rape, and they'll often say, "Even if you don't use this, this was really cathartic for me to write."

Our stories are all unique, but the threads are all kind of the same in some way. Women say, "I thought I was the only one." And then they realize there's a ton of other people having the same experience.

My goal is just to get out there that everyone has a story and all of our stories are important, no matter how small they are. Knowing our narrative and knowing ourselves so deeply and truly helps us live as better versions of ourselves.
