Watch how this volunteer program supports youth suicide prevention.

This week, Grotto catches up with Jordyn Wright — a suicide survivor who now volunteers with Alive on Purpose, a suicide prevention nonprofit organization.

"It's just the best feeling in the world to be able to take all the bad things that happened to me and be able to use them in order to help someone else," she shares.

Video Transcript

Jordyn Wright: My name is Jordan Wright. Alive On Purpose is a suicide-prevention nonprofit. We really like to equip people with the emotional tools to be able to step in front of everything before it's too late. We do things like girl groups, after-school programs, during-school programs, events. When I was about 17, I had attempted suicide four times. I had done all the traditional methods of mental health, but I needed something a little more personal.

A dear friend of mine put me in connection with Latoya Jones, our founder. She really helped me to overcome a lot of the things that I was going through, from being a client, to being a volunteer, to now being a staff member, it's just the best feeling in the world to know that I can take all of the bad things that happened to me and be able to use them in order to help someone else.

My favorite event is definitely our father-daughter dance. Whether or not they get to see their dads on a regular basis, they got to spend one-on-one time with their father.

63% of youth suicides come from children in fatherless homes.

Jordyn: Alive on Purpose is not just about suicide prevention, it's about being your best self and being okay with that. So if you are looking for new ways to volunteer, subscribe to Grotto Network.
