The Thirteenth Station — Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross
We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you — because by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world.
Reading: After this, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took his body. —John 19:38
Reflection: It is over. Jesus’ lifeless corpse was taken down from the Cross and placed in his Mother’s arms. What a contradiction she experienced. Mary had held Jesus when he was an infant, and now she holds her dead Son’s body — all so that we might gain eternal life.
Saying goodbye to those we love is never easy. Sickness and death are inevitable. While we know this is a reality, our hearts never seem ready for the pain caused by death and the absence of a loved one. But because of the Way of the Cross, we know death does not have the final word. Jesus, thank you for the agony you experienced so that one day we might be united with you, with Mary, our Mother, and all those who have gone before us.
