Breaking Up: When It’s Time and How to Do It

Read how to decide how to answer the age-old question, "should we break up or stay together?"

Romantic relationships are hard.

Knowing if and when a relationship is no longer healthy for us can be one of the most difficult parts. Sometimes, we invest so much of ourselves into our romantic partner that it can seem nearly impossible to gain the perspective necessary to honestly assess the situation.

How do I know if this person is right for me? Am I holding on too long? Am I giving up without a fight? What does my heart say? What do I want? Is this love?

God, what should I do?

We ran across a helpful guide to some of these questions over at the Holy Ruckus blog. There, Mike Tenney (who has helped us think through other tricky issues) walks through how to know when a break-up is the right choice. And he has a follow-up piece to offer reflections on how to actually go about ending a relationship once you’ve decided it’s the right thing to do.

It’s all heavy stuff, but it’s important to try to do it well. And whether you’re on the breaking or receiving end of a relationship that has reached its limit, remember that you’re not alone.
