Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Cel-Liberation Day, is a holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States when Texas, the last state to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, declared all slaves free in their state on June 19th, 1865. Though it began as a powerful, freeing day for Black Texan slaves, now African Americans in almost every major city celebrate it. It was the day when not only white Americans were free from British rule, but finally, Black slaves were free as well.
Of course, Juneteenth was only a stepping stone to Black Americans' actual liberation in the US, but it is still a cause for parades, concerts, food, and more that all Americans can participate in!
