Born in 1603, St. Joseph of Cupertino became a Franciscan as a young adult. Following his ordination to the priesthood, Joseph devoted himself to God and the Church.

Through increasing mindfulness during prayer and the work of the Holy Spirit, Joseph soon experienced something quite unique: when celebrating Mass or praying, he would rise from the ground, reportedly more than 70 times. That's right — he would *levitate*.

Of course, this levitating priest drew many onlookers. Joseph did not allow this miracle to build his ego, however. Rather, this unique ability enabled him to grow closer to God and demonstrate humility. In fact, Joseph is said to have secretly worn chains under his clothes to remind him of humility.

Joseph died on September 18, 1663, and was canonized in 1767. His feast day is September 18. St. Joseph is the patron saint of air travelers, astronauts, and pilots.
